Before partition there were only two tin container manufacturing units, owned by a giant company, Metal Box of UK These factories were located in Bombay and Calcutta, which catered the demand of un-divided India.

After partition in 1947, Army establishments which were a large consumer of tin containers, located in Okara, Pakistan, were left with only skeleton facilities which comprised reforming of flattened cans, seaming and filling. To combat this situation, Metal Box of U.K started exporting flattened cans and ends and tops for butter, cheese, milkpowder and other food products to Pakistan.

The factory at Okara kept on working till HASHIMI CAN COMPANY LTD. Was formed and located at Karachi in 1953, in collaboration with Metal Box of U.K and Pakistani entrepreneurs. This company was managed by the British management and it expanded its activities by opening branches in Chittagong, Lahore and Peshawar.

In late 1966, the management changed hands and Pakistani management took over, which continued till 1980s, until finally present management took over in 2001. Since then the company is being run with professional skills. Subsequently few more can making units started operating. The present can making capacity in Pakistan is more than the current demand for containers, but Hashimi can company is concentrating on specialty tin containers and exports.
